Fantastic Machine Embroidery with Joelle Harris

February 8, 2012

Saturday was all about machine embroidery valentine’s hearts and the start of our love of textiles.

This was a great opportunity to try out machine embroidery techniques; Joelle created a fantastic drop in which  incorporated using recycled plastics and textiles whilst making something special for that loved one. (In my case that’s me!) I loved trying out the technique as it’s quick and versatile.

If you missed it there’s still chance to sign up for Joelle’s machine embroidery course next Saturday, (18th Feb) where you’ll be able to explore the technique further and create some recycled cuffs.

Happy Birthday to Amber!! Our First Birthday Party

January 18, 2012

Despite teaching for years, the idea of a birthday party had left me pretty nervous, so after a week of planning and re-planning we finally delivered our first birthday party on Saturday at The MAking House. 11 girls joined Amber to celebrate her 8th birthday. They made button and bead jewellery, their own party bags and finished off with food, cake and games. As per usual I tried to fit too much in, so we over ran a little but all went well; the girls had fun, they made some great pieces and we just managed to fit in a game of musical bumps! And i certainly had a good nights sleep after the days activities!!

Spring at The Making House

January 8, 2012

January is time to clear out the old

So why not come along and recycle it at  The Making House. Our first ‘plastic fantastic’ course of the year is on Sunday 22nd January, so come along and recycle all those  Christmas shopping bags in to vases, cuffs or flowers. Our button box jewellery course is designed for you to create fantastic new jewellery from buttons, broken bits of jewellery and bits and bobs found lurking in pots and drawers. You can also start bringing items for our swishing event in March, we’ll give you tokens to swish at the event, so maybe that unwanted gift could find a new home!

February is of course the month of love and our love of textiles begins here

Throughout the Spring we’ve lots of creative ways of recycling textiles; Joelle Harris will be giving you the skills to get sewing and making your own clothes and interior designs. We’ve a valentine’s drop in on Saturday 4th; make bags and cushions on Saturday 11th or try out machine embroidery on Saturday 18th February. You could even learn how to print your own designs with our print expert Vicky Price. We also love Sarah Turner’s lighting created from recycled pop bottles, which will be on display in the shop this month and Meikie designs who will be exhibiting her beautiful silk painted pictures alongside her tableware, lights, laptop covers created using her images.

March is all about upcycling , swapping and sharing

Taking the old and creating something unique and new, be it clothes, textiles, old lampshade, mirrors frames, even chairs. Our swishing event starts the month on Friday 2nd March, we hope this will inspire you to get upcycling and perhaps join up to our sewing and Junky Interiors courses to give you ideas and the skills to MIY. Our March exhibition is Textiles@The MAking House by Joelle and PAuline, which will bring together various sewing, crochet and peg loom weaving techniques.

We will be running regular silversmithing courses too for those who’d like to develop their jewellery making skills. We have a one day basic silversmithing course on Sunday Feb 5th, ideal for you to make a pair of cufflinks or pendant for your loved one or just for yourself and then our 5 week basic silversmithing course begins Wednesday 22nd Feb.

For more details on our courses and to book go to our courses page

Seriously busy build up to Christmas with Bags2riches and The Making House. I’ve been doing events all around the Burton and Nottingham area  promoting The Making House as well as selling Bags2riches jewellery.  Bags2riches jewellery is on sale at The Nottingham Christmas Market until Christmas Eve. We’re doing the market as a collective which is working really well, so alongside my work there’s loads of lovely things to buy… paper jewellery by Katie Stainer, contemporary neck scarves by Rhea Clements, vintage goodies and textiles by Hannah Stevens, dichroic glass by Daisy and some really tasty cake pops and cupcakes by Delish. The market’s open all week 9-6 with late night shopping until 8pm on Wednesdays and Fridays and Sunday opening 10-5. You can check out all our work on The Nottingham Collective site

Meanwhile at The Making House there’s been our Green Xmas Crafts course, papermaking cards, silversmithing and a lively Christmas drop in this week, along with planning lots of exciting things for next year. So much to do and never enough time!!
